Unifor welcomes B.C. $15 minimum wage timeline

VANCOUVER, Feb. 8, 2018 /CNW/ - Increases to the minimum wage announced today will provide long-overdue relief to tens of thousands of low-wage workers, says Unifor.

"Minimum wage workers deserve a raise," said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President. "$15 is the new standard, and Premier Horgan is wise to get B.C. on track for a fair minimum wage."

Today's announcement from B.C.'s NDP government follows careful study and consultation by the arms-length Fair Wage Commission. The province's timeline to the $15 minimum wage make significant increases in the short term, giving workers a $2.50 per hour increase by June 1, 2019.

"Skyrocketing costs of living in most parts of British Columbia demands a $15 minimum wage," said Joie Warnock, Unifor Western Regional Director. "As we saw in Ontario, increasing the minimum wage is only one part of the puzzle. We strongly encourage the provincial government to take action on employment standards that are fair for workers."

Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing 315,000 workers in every major area of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future.
