Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation Opens Registration for 10th Annual Runyon 5K at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, April 15

BRONX, N.Y., Feb. 6, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Registration has officially opened for the 10th Annual Runyon 5K, which will be held on Sunday, April 15, 2018, at Yankee Stadium. 100 percent of the funds raised will directly support the most promising and innovative cancer researchers in the nation funded by the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation.

"Since our inaugural event in 2009, thousands of Runyon 5K participants have raised more than $4.8 million to help our scientists find the next big breakthroughs in cancer research," said Lorraine W. Egan, President and CEO of Damon Runyon.  "We're excited to celebrate our 10th year at the Stadium with our first-ever spring event and are determined to knock it out of the park with our highest fundraising total yet."

The Runyon 5K route winds through the ballpark's concourses and ramps, and up the stairs between levels. Participants will have the opportunity to take two laps around the warning track that circles the field, appear on the centerfield video board, and meet scientists funded by Damon Runyon.

The 2018 Runyon 5K is presented by MetLife Foundation.

When: Sunday, April 15, 2018, Staggered start

Where: Yankee Stadium, One East 161st Street, Bronx, New York 10451

Registration:  Participants can register at runyon5k.org for $45 through April 4. The entry fee will increase to $60 on April 5. A reduced entry fee is available for children ages five through 12. Participants are encouraged to raise funds for cancer research. For additional registration details, visit www.runyon5k.org or email [email protected].

As always, 100 percent of donations raised by Runyon 5K participants will directly support the nation's most gifted young scientists, pursuing cures for all forms of cancer.  In 2017 alone, Damon Runyon scientists made important breakthroughs such as conducting one of the first clinical trials of personalized cancer vaccines, engineering a new therapy to target pediatric neuroblastoma, and identifying molecular mechanisms that explain why immunotherapy works only in certain patients.

The Runyon 5K marks the latest chapter in the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation's long history with the Yankees.  After the Foundation's establishment in 1946, Joe DiMaggio was on its Board of Directors and Mickey Mantle was an active fundraiser.  Damon Runyon, who died from throat cancer in 1946, was a New York writer who began his career as a baseball journalist. He revolutionized how the game was covered and often reported on Yankees games.
