The U.S. Mint will recognize the 100th anniversary of The American Legion with release of commemorative coins

WASHINGTON, Feb. 6, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Legion 100th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Act was enacted last fall and directs the Secretary of the Treasury to mint and issue gold, silver and clad half-dollar coins in celebration of the 100th anniversary of The American Legion. In 2019, The American Legion, the nation's largest veterans service organization, will celebrate a century of advocating for veterans, servicemembers and their families while providing impactful programs that have shaped the fabric of America.

Before the commemorative coins are produced, designs that are emblematic of the 100 years of The American Legion will be unveiled to the public. The Department of the Treasury will consult with leadership from The American Legion, the Commission of Fine Arts and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee to determine the designs that will be produced.

"This is a wonderful honor for The American Legion," said Denise Rohan, national commander of The American Legion. "These coins will help us commemorate and celebrate the outstanding work that has been done by our organization during the last 100 years. We are grateful to those who worked to bring this to fruition."

Minted and issued in 2019, the coins will be part of The American Legion Centennial Celebration as the organization enters a new century of continued dedication and commitment to veterans, servicemembers and their families.
