WASHINGTON, Jan. 31, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Keeping IDentities Safe, a Washington D.C. based non-profit, is pleased to recognize that the State of Louisiana and the State of Michigan each received official notification on January 23, 2018 that their processes for issuing driver's licenses and Identity Documents are REAL ID compliant.

Brian Zimmer, President of Keeping IDentities Safe stated, "Both Louisiana and Michigan have undertaken superlative public information campaigns to educate their residents as to why and how the new REAL ID identity proofing and law presence confirmation procedures are necessary.  Residents will no longer be in a state of uncertainty regarding whether their driver's licenses will be accepted for airline boarding in 2020."

In each state, residents have the choice of selecting either a REAL ID compliant driver's license marked with a gold star in the upper right corner, or a non-compliant driver's license with a different marking.  In Louisiana non-compliant driver's licenses carry the statement "NOT FOR FEDERAL IDENTIFICATION" in the upper right corner. All Louisiana and Michigan state issued ID's and driver's licenses will continue to be accepted through Oct. 1, 2020, for travel on commercial air lines.

After October 1, 2020, people presenting driver's licenses or state issued IDs marked as non-compliant with REAL ID issuance requirements will need to present alternative identification proofs, such as a passport, passport card or a federal issued travel document such as TSA-PRE or Global Entry cards.

Louisiana and Michigan bring the total authorized by the Department of Homeland Security as fully REAL ID compliant to twenty nine states.
