The Latino Coalition Chairman Hector Barreto on President Trump's State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON, Jan. 31, 2018 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Latino Coalition (TLC), the leading, national non-partisan advocacy organization representing Hispanic businesses and consumers, issued the following statement regarding President Trump's first State of the Union Address:

"Last night, President Trump shared an optimistic message during his first State of the Union address," said Hector Barreto, The Latino Coalition Chairman and former U.S. Small Business Administrator.  "Taking the approach of extending an olive branch, the President not only spoke of a resilient nation; he praised our diversity and called on Congress to work for a safe, strong and proud America through key issues including the economy, infrastructure, immigration, trade and national security."

"The President touted the biggest tax cuts and reform in our nation's history? tax reform that is exponentially creating jobs and spiking an unprecedented run of growth.  He focused on the economic priorities to continue fostering wealth, and applauded that this nation is succeeding squarely as a result of leveraging American ingenuity."

"I commend the President for challenging Congress to meet the needs of a crumbling infrastructure with safe, reliable and modern advancements and look forward to the doors his robust plan will open for the small business community."

"America has always been a nation of immigrants, and immigration reform has proven to be a polarizing topic that has become the ultimate political football.  However, the time for sensible, compassionate public policy on immigration is now.  Last night, in a bipartisan and unifying manner, our President laid out a plan to ensure safe and lawful migration into this country, while defending America's borders and protecting our workers and taxpayers."

"Moreover, the President's genuine effort to fix a broken immigration system through border security, DACA legalization, protecting families and repurposing the visa lottery will enhance the security of our nation, serve American interests and champion high-skilled and low-skilled workers alike, to continue expanding our economy and creating jobs.  The Latino Coalition is hopeful that the days of rhetoric on immigration reform will be a thing of the past, and we anticipate policy that bolsters our economy, while reinforcing the rule of law and celebrating our history as a melting pot of immigrants," Barreto added.
