Chemours closure will cost 33 good jobs

MAITLAND, ON, Jan. 25, 2018 /CNW/ - The closure of the Suva Division of ?Chemours Canada Company at the Maitland Site, resulting in 33 people losing their livelihoods, is another blow to the Brockville area.

"It's terrible news for Chemours workers and it's terrible news for the community," said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President. "When good high-paying jobs disappear, the community suffers."

Four divisions operating at the Maitland Site have closed since 2004, draining hundreds of good high-paying jobs from the small Ontario community. First announced in August 2017, the closure means production will cease on October 31, 2018. The wind down will continue until most workers are laid off on December 31, 2018. Unifor Local 28-O represents the chemical controllers that will be losing their jobs.

The union says that the company has agreed to honour the severance provisions of the collective agreement.

Brockville's largest industrial employer Proctor & Gamble, also recently announced it will close its facility, shedding 500 good jobs. DuPont spun off its Fluorproducts Division and created The Chemours Company in 2014.
