Environmental Initiatives Help Municipality of Durham Address Climate Change

WHITBY, ON, Jan. 25, 2018 /CNW/ - Governments are working together to help make their communities more sustainable, leading to a better overall quality of life for Canadians as we transition to a low-carbon economy.

Member of Parliament for Whitby, Celina Caesar-Chavannes, on behalf of Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, the Honourable Jim Carr, today announced $525,000 for two innovative recycling initiatives in the Region of Durham, Ontario, to help Canada realize its climate change goals.

The first project received $350,000 for a reclamation pilot project on the Blackstock Landfill to determine the viability of recycling buried materials as an alternative to regrading old landfills. If successful, this could provide a blueprint for other landfills. The second project, which received $175,000 for a feasibility study, will consider the financial and technical aspects of building an integrated waste management system utilizing an anaerobic digestion facility.

In response to Canada's international and domestic goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the Government of Canada endowed the Federation of Canadian Municipalities with $550 million to establish the Green Municipal Fund, which was increased by $125 million in Budget 2016.

The fund supports partnerships and the leveraging of public and private sector funding to reach higher standards of air, water and soil quality and climate protection. To date, it has funded over 1,400 municipal initiatives.
