Financial Education Benefits Center Reminds Members That Pets Can Help With Exercise Goals

SAN RAMON, Calif., Jan. 24, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- A popular goal for many in the new year is to work on physical health. That usually means signing up for a gym membership or vowing to eat more healthy home-cooked meals. But sometimes it's easier to curl up on the couch and cuddle with a pet than get up and work out. Instead of leaving the couch and pet behind, some people compromise and just leave the couch. Working out with pets is becoming a new fitness fad that may be worth a try. Financial Education Benefits Center (FEBC) encourages all members to safely include their pet in their workouts and to keep both parties healthy.

Exercise is as good for pets as it is for their owners. Benefits of pet exercise range from reducing boredom (and the accompanying bad behavior) to healthy joints and longer lives. While humans get those same benefits, they experience additional benefits for exercising with pets. For example, according to various studies, dog owners are more likely to reach fitness goals, push their limits, and exercise in their leisure time than people who do not own dogs. All that makes it much easier to get the recommended 150 minutes of weekly physical activity.

"It can be so hard to get out and exercise, but being able to include your pet might make it easier," said Jennifer Martinez, Manager at FEBC. "And if your pet is overweight, exercising with them can benefit both of you."

It's easy to see how dogs make good exercise partners, but they aren't the only ones. Cats can help their owners get exercise, too. For example, the past few years have seen an emergence of cat yoga classes, in which cats roam free during a yoga class. For the more outdoorsy type of pet owner, both dogs and cats can make good hiking partners, as long as they are properly harness-trained and socialized.

Including pets in workouts may help motivate, but it's important that owners who choose to do so consider their pet's health needs as well as their own. Pets who are overweight certainly might benefit from working out, but their owners should be careful not to push too hard. Just like it's a good idea to talk to a doctor before starting a new exercise routine, owners should consult their vet before starting a new routine with their pet. FEBC will soon offer a member benefit that provides discounts on pet care expenses, like visits to participating veterinarians and food and toys.

"Exercise is great for both pet and owner," said Martinez. "But owners should always be mindful of their pet's needs. If owners see anything that worries them, they shouldn't hesitate to talk to their vet. And for those potentially expensive vet visits, FEBC's upcoming pet care benefit can provide some welcome discounts."
