Residents in Bracebridge to benefit from improved public transit

BRACEBRIDGE, ON, Jan. 19, 2018 /CNW/ - Investing in public infrastructure supports efficient, affordable and sustainable transit services that help Canadians and their families get to work, school and essential services on time and back home safely at the end of a long day.

The Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, the Honourable Glenn Thibeault, Member of Provincial Parliament for Sudbury, on behalf of the Honourable Kathryn McGarry, Ontario Minister of Transportation, and His Worship Graydon Smith, Mayor of the Town of Bracebridge, today announced $131,000 in funding for a project that will support the growth and efficiency of Bracebridge's public transit system and improve transit rider experience.

The Government of Canada is providing up to $50,000 through the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund for this project while the Corporation of the Town of Bracebridge is providing the remaining costs.

The funding will be used to install bus stop pads, benches, bus lay-bys, and shelters. Not only will this project improve passenger accessibility and safety, it will also help streamline the Town's daily bus operations.

This investment is part of an agreement between Canada and Ontario for the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund.

• The Government of Canada will invest more than $180 billion over 12 years in public transit projects, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, trade and transportation routes, and Canada's rural and northern communities.
• $25.3 billion of this funding will support public transit projects, including $5 billion that will be available for investment through the Canada Infrastructure Bank.
• Since 2004, the Government of Ontario has committed $4.1 billion to municipalities across the province through the provincial gas tax program. This funding supports municipal transit systems.
