MIAMI, Jan. 19, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The 4th Annual Miami Bitcoin Hackathon kicks off on Friday, January 19th and runs through Sunday, January 21 at The Lab Miami in Wynwood. Founded and run by Miami based Bitcoin ATM company, Bitstop, the competition will count some of Miami's most talented teams of developers as participants, all competing to create original code that bridges the gap between tech and consumer, ultimately empowering the world via the use of Bitcoin. The event will feature 26 hours of non-stop coding, all culminating in presentations and a judging ceremony where prizes in BTC will be awarded.

"We want to inspire local South Florida developers and get them excited about building applications using Bitcoin," said Bitstop Co-Founder and Hackathon judge, Andrew Barnard, "which is why we started the Miami Bitcoin Hackathon four years ago and have awarded over a million dollars in Bitcoin to local developers. It's one of the largest and longest running Bitcoin hackathons in the world now."

Events begin on Friday, January 19 at 7:00 p.m., with an opening party and networking mixer. Hackathon participant registration begins Saturday morning, followed by breakfast; after this, hacking will officially commence at 9 a.m. The teams will continue coding through the rest of the day, into the next morning, developing original code for applications and software that integrate Bitcoin in user friendly, yet innovative ways. Hacking ends at 11 a.m. on Sunday morning. A panel of judges will review the submitted apps and software, judging on a criteria comprised of creativity, ability to incorporate Bitcoin in a user-friendly way, and execution. Prizes will be awarded to the teams with the best code. Judges for the 2018 Miami Bitcoin Hackathon will include Bitstop co-founders Dainel Vera and Andrew Barnard, CMO of Breadwallet Aaron Lasher and CTO of Vezt Enrique Canals.

The first place winning team will receive the grand prize of .75 BTC (currently worth about $9,000 USD). Second place will be awarded .25 BTC (equivalent to about $3,000 USD.) Subsequent winning placements continue on to sixth place, with corresponding bitcoin prizes awarded for all.

Over the course of the 3 previous hackathons, Bitstop has given away 75BTC, which is over 1 million USD today that has been donated to the local tech hub. "We think Miami is one of the best places to work on Bitcoin because it's the most underbanked and financially underserved city in the United States," said Bitstop co-founder and Hackathon host, Doug Carrillo, "Miami is the international hub for Latin America, Central America and the Caribbean where currency issues like high inflation are common. Local developers are starting to realize that Bitcoin may be the answer to many of the problems in these countries."
