Call for entries: Landsberg Award celebrates greater profile for women's issues

TORONTO, Jan. 18, 2018 /CNW/ - Journalists who champion women's issues are encouraged to apply for The Landsberg Award, presented by The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) in association with the Canadian Women's Foundation. The deadline is Feb. 16, 2018.

"Like the redoubtable feminist icon it's named for, the Landsberg Award has celebrated and inspired excellent, path-breaking work by journalists who advance women's issues," says jury member Sarmishta Subramanian, editor-in-chief of the Literary Review of Canada. "In this time of Trump and #MeToo, that work is more valuable than ever ? and so is recognizing and rewarding it."

This award recognizes a working journalist?staff or freelance?doing exceptional research, analysis and reporting through a gender lens about women's issues. Journalists working in print, broadcast and online news reporting are eligible to apply. The recipient will receive $5,000 from the Canadian Women's Foundation.

The award is named after Michele Landsberg?award-winning Canadian journalist, author, social activist and feminist?to acknowledge the tremendous impact she had as an advocate and role model.

Last year's winner was The Globe and Mail's Tavia Grant in recognition of her exceptional coverage of women's equality issues. Grant's articles explored the trafficking of Indigenous women as well as the ongoing gender pay gap.

The winner, who will be selected by a jury of working journalists and Landsberg, will be recognized at the CJF Awards on June 14 in Toronto at the Fairmont Royal York.  Early bird rates for tickets and tables are available until Jan. 31, 2018.

About the Canadian Women's Foundation
The Canadian Women's Foundation is Canada's public foundation for women and girls. We empower women and girls in Canada to move out of violence, out of poverty, and into confidence and leadership. Since 1991, we've raised money and funded programs in more than 1,500 communities across Canada, and are one of the largest women's foundations in the world. We take a positive approach to addressing root causes of the most critical issues facing women and girls. We study and share the best ways to create long-term change and bring community organizations together for training and to learn from each other. We carefully select and fund the programs with the strongest outcomes and regularly evaluate their work. We have a special focus on building a community of women helping other women. Helping women creates safer families and communities, and a more prosperous society for all of us. We invest in the strength of women and the dreams of girls.
