Catholic League: NEA Funds Filthy Assault on Christianity

WASHINGTON, Jan. 17, 2018 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Jan. 23 at 9:30 a.m., Catholic and evangelical leaders will join Catholic League president Bill Donohue at the National Press Club to address the NEA-funded off-Broadway venue that is hosting "Jerry Springer: The Opera." It is the most vile and obscene assault on Christianity ever performed. When it was performed in England in the 2000s, it drew a strong response from the Christian community.

The site of this play is The New Group. It receives most of its money from public sources, the leading donor being the National Endowment for the Arts. In essence, Christians are being forced to subsidize a frontal assault on their religion. Our principle is quite simple: if it is wrong to use public funds to promote religion, it is wrong to use public funds to bash it.

The new chairman of the NEA assumes office in April; President Trump will soon be nominating his choice. Catholic and Protestant organizations who share our outrage over public funds being used to underwrite this musical are appealing to the president to select someone who will not countenance future assaults on Christian sensibilities.

President Trump wanted to cut public funding for the arts, something the Catholic League has long supported. But given that the Congress did not agree, we are now hoping to have a new chairman of the NEA who shares our concerns and puts an end to subsidized Christian-bashing grantees, exhibitions, and performances.
