Open for submissions: CJF Jackman Award for Excellence in Journalism
TORONTO, Jan. 17, 2018 /CNW/ - News organizations whose reporting has initiated profound and positive change are encouraged to apply for The Canadian Journalism Foundation's (CJF) Jackman Award for Excellence in Journalism. Two winners are selected annually, one for large media and one for small. This year's deadline for submissions is Feb. 16, 2018.
"Some stories touch us, help us understand a complex reality and give us the impetus to act to make our world a better place?despite the serious challenges faced by the media," says Colette Brin, a jury member who serves as a professor at Université Laval's Département d'information et de communication and the director of the Centre d'études sur les médias. "The CJF Jackman Award for Excellence in Journalism allows us to honour the outstanding work of journalists and to inspire them to excel."
Since 1996, the CJF has celebrated news organizations that embrace ideals of journalistic excellence ? accuracy, independence, accountability, courage and originality. Since 2007, two winners have been selected, one for large media and the other for small media. News organizations across the country can review the details and criteria before applying.
Last year's winners were The Canadian Press (large media) for its "Open Secret" series exploring sexual trauma involving children in Indigenous communities and The London Free Press (small media) for its "Indiscernible" series exposing serious problems in Ontario's justice and mental-health-care systems.
A shortlist will be announced in April, with the winner announced at the CJF Awards at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto on June 14, 2018. Early-bird rates for tickets and tables are available until Jan. 31, 2018.
