Government of Canada awards construction contract for new Immigration Holding Centre in Surrey, B.C.

Investing in federal infrastructure

SURREY, BC, Dec. 21, 2017 /CNW/ - The Government of Canada is committed to preserving the integrity of its resources, while ensuring the health and safety of its building occupants.

The Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Public Services and Procurement, today announced a contract to LEC Engineering Contracting Ltd. for the construction of the new Immigration Holding Centre in Surrey, British Columbia.

This key investment is made under the Government of Canada's National Immigration Detention Framework, which includes funding to improve immigration detention infrastructure and reduce reliance on provincial correctional facilities to house immigration detainees.

The contract, valued at almost $23.1 million, is the result of a competitive tendering process initiated earlier this summer. The contract consists of refitting an existing federal building into a new centre designed specifically for immigration detention purposes. This new facility will replace the existing short-term Immigration Holding Centre at the Vancouver International Airport. Construction work includes interior and exterior renovations, roofing replacement, structural upgrades, landscape improvements, and mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades which will meet today's health, safety, and environmental standards.

Construction is expected to be completed by November 2018. It is anticipated that this construction contract will create significant local jobs from start to finish.

Quotes

"Our government is committed to investing in repairs and retrofits to its wide range of properties and buildings. This federal building will become an accessible and modern facility that meets today's health, safety and environmental standards. This project will in turn create local business opportunities and jobs in the construction industry."
