Verdict in terrorism case
MONTREAL, Dec. 19, 2017 /CNW/ - A jury found El Mahdi Jamali, 20, and Sabrine Djermane, 21, not guilty today in the Superior Court of Quebec of committing an indictable offence for the benefit of, at the direction of or in association with a terrorist group, contrary to section 83.2 of the Criminal Code.
They were also found not guilty of making or having in their possession an explosive substance with the intent to endanger life or cause serious damage to property, or enable another person to do so, contrary to s. 81(1)d and attempting to leave Canada for the purpose of committing an act or omission outside Canada, namely participating in the activities of a terrorist group, contrary to s. 83.181 of the Criminal Code.
El Mahdi Jamali was found guilty of a lesser, included offence of making or having in his possession or under his care or control any explosive substance, contrary to s. 82 (1) of the Criminal Code.
On November 20, 2017, the court granted a directed verdict motion on a third count, namely facilitating terrorist activities contrary to s. 83.19 and an acquittal was entered.
Applications for s. 810.011 terrorism peace bonds were adjourned to January 16, 2018.
The PPSC has 30 days to decide whether it will appeal the decision.
