Taking to the ice for Alzheimer's disease at Nathan Phillips Square

TORONTO, Dec. 13, 2017 /CNW/ - Steve McNeil is lacing up his skates to help the Alzheimer Society of Toronto meet the growing demand for programs and services for local residents affected by Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

For a fifth consecutive year, McNeil returns to Nathan Phillips Square on Friday, December 15 to skate for 19 hours and 26 minutes to raise much-needed funds.

Why the unusual time? McNeil's mom, Eunice, was born December 15, 1926, and lived 15 years with Alzheimer's disease before it claimed her life.      

Says McNeil, "I love to skate and it's my way of raising money and honour my mother's memory at the same time. It's my way of getting people out in the community and talk about Alzheimer's that affects so many other moms out there."  

McNeil hopes to raise $19,260. To date, his "skate-a-thon" has contributed $17,000 to local programs and services available through the Alzheimer Society.
