Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill & Ecosystem Science Conference Explores Response, Restoration, and Resiliency in the Gulf

WASHINGTON, Dec. 13, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- How well has the Gulf of Mexico region recovered following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill? What did we learn to help recovery following future spills? Join some of the Gulf's leading experts at the 2018 Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill & Ecosystem Science Conference as they discuss their research and the path ahead for the Gulf.

The 2018 Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill & Ecosystem Science Conference will take place February 5-8, 2018 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The sixth annual conference, organized by a diverse group of partners, will bring together hundreds of experts from academia, state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations and industry to share the latest oil spill and ecosystem scientific discoveries, innovations, technologies and policies.

This year, conference participants will focus on exploring how fundamental science can help restore and maintain Gulf ecosystem integrity, inform response strategies, and strengthen social and ecological resilience. A key element of the conference will be cross-cutting discussions among academics, industry, government agencies, and public interest organizations surrounding the following six topics:

  1. Science for restoration, management, and policy
  2. Science for response
  3. Social and ecological resilience
  4. General ecosystem science: gulf ecology
  5. Gulf connectivity: physical and chemical interactions
  6. Monitoring, data management, and analysis

The four-day conference will consist of 24 scientific sessions and 7 mini-sessions with close to 300 oral presentations and 125 poster presentations.  Several associated meetings, events and workshops will also be held. Click here to view the conference schedule at a glance.

The registration fee will be waived for credentialed members of the media. Please contact Leslie Smith ([email protected]) for details.
