Statement by Minister Joly on Hanukkah

Today, Jewish communities in Canada and around the world celebrate the beginning of Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights

OTTAWA, Dec. 12, 2017 /CNW/ - Tonight at sundown, millions of Jewish people in Canada and around the world will mark the beginning of Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights.

This joyous eight-day celebration commemorates the Jewish people's struggle for freedom from oppression and the victory of light over darkness. At the heart of the celebration is the nightly lighting of the Hanukkah menorah, accompanied by blessings, prayers and songs.

Canada is proud to be home to one of the largest Jewish diaspora communities in the world. As we celebrate Canada 150 and our rich diversity, Hanukkah is an ideal opportunity for us all to reflect on the blessings and freedom we enjoy, and turn our thoughts to those around the world still facing tyranny and oppression. As the story of Hanukkah reminds us, miracles are possible, even during the most challenging of times.

As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Multiculturalism, I want to wish everyone celebrating Hanukkah a bright and peaceful holiday. Chag sameach!
