John Haines of Addiction Canada focuses on offering the foremost in addiction care after charges dropped

There is one name synonymous with everything addiction and interventions in Canada: John Haines.

TORONTO, Dec. 11, 2017 /CNW/ - For the last 14 years, John Haines has been involved in addiction recovery and interventions in Canada as well as being the owner of private addiction treatment organization, Addiction Canada. Haines has had his share of scrutiny over the years. "The private addiction treatment business seems to always get a bad rap in the press," says Haines. "The misconception usually comes from the fact that the public think we are out to take advantage of the vulnerable families in crisis by using the fact that they can get immediate access to care for a price." This comes by way of comparison to long wait lists to get into government funded addiction treatment centres across Canada.

In 2014, an investigation was begun into Addictions Canada and Haines. In 2015, the lead investigator decided to charge Haines and two of their many doctors with various offenses. The worst alleged Haines was a criminal mastermind who was using Addiction Canada and fake doctors to "rip off" clients in excess of $6 Million, along with other charges, such as laundering money, possession of proceeds, trafficking in narcotics and others. With subsequent media exposure, the once very successful and busy addiction treatment organization began a great decline. Haines decided to turn over delivery of care of those in need of addiction treatment in Canada to his son Dylan Maggiacomo's organization, Addiction Recovery Network.

In 2015, Haines left it to his investigators and lawyers to handle the charges, while he went back to his roots as one of Canada's leading interventionists. With a new opioid epidemic and many overdose deaths as a result, Haines became very busy across Canada, performing as many as 62 interventions in 2017 alone. In November 2017, John was vindicated and ALL charges against him and Addiction Canada were dropped. Haines says, "I will take the next while to vindicate myself but also to get right back into the business with my son Dylan and save as many lives as possible." Haines further states, "With the last two and half years, we have learned a great deal and I will become a great advocate for private addiction treatment regulation. I will be sure to enforce parameters that are required to keep people safe and ensure that those people are getting the appropriate medical and therapeutic care, specifically in areas of site security, one-on-one therapy, aftercare services for clients and proper certified staffing."

John Haines is a former pro football player whose involvement with pain medications, alcohol and cocaine led him down a road to full blown addiction. In early 2000, after many failed government funded treatment programs and 12-step attempts, Haines ended up near death in the hospital. In April of 2000, he embarked on a 90-day private treatment program and has remained clean and sober since. In 2003, Haines went back to school earning two psychology degrees, including a Masters.  He followed these with certificates and diplomas in Addiction Counseling and Psychotherapy, and studied interventions under renowned American interventionist Warren Boyd. In 2005, Haines felt the need to open his own treatment centre to better care for those he was intervening with, as well as raising the bar on addiction treatment services in Canada. Haines has since become one of the most prolific treatment centre owners in Canada as well as one of the top interventionists in the country.
