Government of Canada supports healthier smiles - National research network receives $850,000 to advance oral health research to better address the needs of Canadians


MONTREAL, Dec. 11, 2017 /CNW/ - A national network of researchers will receive additional funding from the Government of Canada to support its work to improve the oral health of Canadians through strong collaboration, education, and training. The Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Health, today announced funding of $850,000 for the Network for Canadian Oral Health Research through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

The Network, led by Dr. Alain Moreau at le Centre hospitalier universitaire Sainte-Justine and Université de Montreal, connects more than 440 members across the country, including researchers, trainees, dental professionals, and industry representatives. Dr. Moreau and his team foster interdisciplinary research, provide mentorship and training opportunities, and facilitate the translation of research into knowledge that leads to better oral health. They also serve an important role in focusing research into oral health issues affecting children, seniors, and Indigenous peoples, and issues related to aging and complex diseases.

Network for Canadian Oral Health Research

Oral health is an important part of overall health and well-being. While Canada ranks highly in oral health generally, it faces challenges in providing oral health services to the most vulnerable segments of the population, including seniors, low-income populations, children and Indigenous peoples. Oral health research contributes significantly to improving the oral health status of Canadians by supporting the development of innovative products and the services provided by dental professionals.

To promote research innovation and collaboration, the Government of Canada is supporting the Network for Canadian Oral Health Research (NCOHR). Established in 2012 with funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, NCOHR is committed to making a difference in the oral health of all Canadians. The mission is to:

Today, NCOHR has more than 440 members across the country, including researchers, trainees, dental health professionals, and industry representatives.
