Joint Statement by Ministers Joly and Wilson-Raybould on Human Rights Day
December 10 marks Human Rights Day in Canada and around the world
GATINEAU, QC, Dec. 10, 2017 /CNW Telbec/ - Canada is strong not in spite of our differences, but because of them. Our culture is as multi-faceted as our country and the people who inhabit it: from the First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, to our French and English heritage, to those who have come here from around the world. We are a proud and vibrant country woven together by our many identities and underlined by a core value of respect.
Human Rights Day is recognized worldwide every year on December 10?the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. The Declaration affirms the equal dignity and worth of every person, and outlines the rights and freedoms to which everyone is inherently entitled as a human being.
As Canadians, we reaffirm our commitment?as individuals and as a country?to protect and promote human rights, both at home and around the world. There is still much work to be done, and we must always strive to do better.
As we reflect on the significance on this year's Human Rights Day and on the upcoming 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 2018, we look forward to engaging with provincial and territorial ministers, civil society and Indigenous organizations at the upcoming meeting on Human Rights, the first of its kind in nearly 30 years. Together, we will work to advance human rights and reaffirm our commitment to an inclusive society where everyone has the ability to reach their full potential.
