Housing Authority of Shreveport & Community Partners Host Event to Help Youth Seal Records of Arrest or Conviction

SHREVEPORT, La., Dec. 8, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- On Dec. 9, 2017, the Justice & Accountability Center of Louisiana and the Housing Authority of the City of Shreveport (HACS) alongside community partners will host the second event in a series designed to assist youth with their criminal records. Shreveport community members are invited to this free event to consult with a volunteer attorney and receive assistance in starting the process of expunging a record of arrest or conviction. The goal of the series is to remove barriers that young people may face in accessing housing and employment due to a criminal record.

"The Housing Authority of the City of Shreveport is proud to partner with the City of Shreveport to work with the Justice and Accountability Center of Louisiana to administer the JRAP Program to enable eligible public housing residents the opportunity to expunge their criminal record for a brighter future," said Bobby R. Collins, CEO of the Shreveport Housing Authority.

HACS is working alongside community organizations through the Juvenile Re-Entry Assistance Program (JRAP) sponsored by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). Partners include the Justice & Accountability Center of Louisiana, The Norris Law Group, LLC, The Law Offices of Felicia M. Hamilton, LLC, Voice of the Experienced (VOTE), the NAACP, and the Louisiana State Bar Association. Partners may be able to provide supplemental assistance to youth and adults who attend the event.

The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. and conclude at 4:00 p.m. at Barton Drive Manor, located at 1625 Barton Drive, Shreveport, Louisiana 71107. There will be an educational presentation on wills and succession planning at 12:00 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring the court minutes for the case that they seek an expungement. The event is free and open to the public.
