Bipartisan Support To Repeal The "Cadillac Tax" Grows As House Cosponsorship Tops The Magic Number: 218

WASHINGTON, Dec. 5, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Alliance to Fight the 40 | Don't Tax My Health Care today announced that Congressional support for repeal of the "Cadillac Tax" exceeded the "magic" number of 218 members in the House of Representatives who have signed on to legislation (H.R. 173) to fully repeal the tax. The strong bipartisan number of cosponsors signifies that more than half of members in the House support the effort to repeal the "Cadillac Tax." Legislation to repeal the tax requires a simple majority to pass in the House.

Fight the 40 | Don't Tax My Health Care is a broad-based coalition comprised of businesses, patient advocates, employer organizations, consumer groups and other stakeholders that support employer-sponsored health coverage. This coverage is the backbone of our health care system and protects over 177 million Americans. The Alliance seeks to repeal the "Cadillac Tax" and work with Congress to prevent increased income taxes on workers who rely on employer-sponsored health coverage.

"The growing number of cosponsors reflects the work of the Alliance members to highlight for Congress the devastating effects of the 'Cadillac Tax' on the health coverage of working Americans," said James A. Klein, President of the American Benefits Council. "As Congress puts together a year-end package to address other Affordable Care Act taxes, we hope Leadership acknowledges the support for repealing the 'Cadillac Tax' and protecting employer-sponsored coverage. Exceeding 218 cosponsors illustrates the overwhelming bipartisan agreement ? by supporters and opponents of the ACA alike ? on the need to repeal this onerous tax and keep health care affordable for working families."

More than 178 million Americans depend on employer-provided health insurance. The only way for employers to escape the looming "Cadillac Tax" is to reluctantly reduce coverage and shift additional costs to workers. The Cadillac Tax goes into effect in 2020.  But because employers make benefit decisions on a two year horizon, and try to implement changes over time, the tax is having a negative impact right now. Only full repeal can give employers and workers the certainty they need to have stable, efficient and affordable health coverage.

The Alliance to Fight the 40 | Don't Tax My Health Care is a broad-based coalition comprised of businesses, patient advocates, employer organizations, unions, local governments, health care companies, consumer groups and other stakeholders that support employer-sponsored health coverage. This coverage is the backbone of our health care system and protects over 178 million Americans. The Alliance seeks to repeal the 40% "Cadillac Tax" on health benefits and work with Congress and the Administration to prevent increased income taxes on workers, families and retirees who rely on employer-sponsored health coverage. The Alliance is committed to ensuring that employer-sponsored coverage remains an effective and affordable option for working Americans and their families.
