"26 Popular Children's Games from Around the World" Finally, a Game That Promotes Cultural Understanding and Tolerance among Children
MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 30, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Ulli Appelbaum, a Minneapolis-based brand consultant by day and a full-time father of three, saw a gap in the market and decided to create this game for his children, just in time for the holidays. The deck contains 26 game cards, each of which focuses on a different country and explains the rules of a game that's popular among children there (for example, "Catch the Dragon's Tail" from China or "Rooster Fight" from Brazil). Each card also includes a series of fun facts about that country which can be used as a conversation starter to introduce children to other cultures. "Every parent knows that the best way to teach your child something new is through fun and play," says Appelbaum. Games were selected that require a minimum of accessories, and most are gender-neutral. They can be played by kids four years old and up and are a great way to bring together the whole family, or the neighborhood.
"I have three young children, Lola (8), Fynn (8) and Leo (6), who are biracial and who live in a bicultural, German-American household in a country (the US) that is increasingly divisive and intolerant. And that bothered me," says Applebaum. "Through my upbringing I've learned the value and benefits that come from living in and learning from other cultures, and I feel that it is my responsibility as a parent to instill those same values of diversity and tolerance in my children. And since I didn't find any games in the toys aisles of the big box retailers to help me do that, I decided to create one myself with the help of my kids."
The game is sold exclusively on Amazon for $29.90, where it has all five-star reviews. Part of the proceeds will be donated to a child-friendly charity.
