RoC® Skincare Partners With Actress Thandie Newton To Expose How Three Little Words--"For Your Age"-- Undermine Women's Self-Esteem

SKILLMAN, N.J., Nov. 30, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- According to a nationwide survey by Wakefield Research of 1,000 women aged 40+, the majority of women would rather not be complimented at all versus receiving one paired with the backhanded modifier "for your age." Unfortunately, within the past year, 82 percent of women have indeed been told they look "great for their age." In response to the findings, and in tandem with RoC® Skincare's 60th year of advancing the science of skincare, RoC® is teaming up with actress Thandie Newton to launch the "For Your Age" campaign. By evolving the dialogue on language and aging, the goal is to eventually eliminate unnecessary qualifiers for beauty.

"Concerns pertaining to the skin are rarely just physical ? there are powerful mental and emotional factors that can also come into play," says New York City dermatologist Dr. Elizabeth Hale. "I'm always amazed how frequently my patients' skincare concerns or insecurities are triggered by a passing comment or misguided compliment. There's no question: when it comes to matters of age and skin, words matter."

In fact, since turning 40, more than 60 percent of women surveyed say they have altered their behavior after being told their actions were not "age-appropriate." However, being "age-appropriate" is a frustrating contradiction: 87 percent believe society expects them to act their age, yet look younger.

Even a celebrity like Thandie Newton is no stranger to feeling pigeonholed. "It's natural for society to organize people into categories, which only leads to being told how we should look and feel," says Newton. "But the reality is age shouldn't be a barrier to asserting our emerging uniqueness as women. The fun is figuring out who our best self is, loving the journey and fearlessly progressing toward the destination."

Women can join RoC® and Thandie Newton by sharing examples of compliments using #ForYourAge on social media to heighten awareness of this negative context and misguided phrasing.
