Dr. Patti Flint offers Women in Science scholarship for third year, raises amount to $5,000, no age restriction

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Nov. 29, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Arizona based girls and women pursuing careers in the hard sciences have a chance to win a $5,000 scholarship sponsored by Scottsdale plastic surgeon Patti Flint, MD.

Applications are now being accepted for the Dr. Patti Flint Women in Science annual scholarship. The enrollment period will remain open from November 15, 2017, through January 30, 2018. A cash prize of $5,000 will be awarded to a single winner to be used towards educational expenses associated with a university degree, technical degree or vocational program in medicine, healthcare, pharmacology, biology, physics, chemistry, engineering or another hard science.

Applicants must be pursuing or plan to pursue an educational program in the hard sciences at an Arizona-based institution. There are no age restrictions as Dr. Flint acknowledges there are many paths women can take towards a career in science. Applicants may be new or currently-enrolled students and will be asked to provide a letter of recommendation as well as answer several short essay questions. The online application is currently available at:

The Women in Science scholarship was established in 2015 as a means of encouraging and providing financial support to women wanting to work in the field of science. As a young student, Dr. Flint experienced firsthand the lack of support, lack of mentorship, and financial difficulties associated with pursuing a career in medicine.

"It's my way of giving back and giving girls a leg up," stated Dr. Flint, who, in addition to awarding a $3,000 scholarship to the 2016 recipient, also invited the nursing student to spend a day shadowing her in the operating room at her Scottsdale surgery center.

"If there is one thing young girls need, it's more encouragement," Dr. Flint added.

All Arizona women and girls meeting the scholarship requirements are encouraged to apply, including applicants from previous years.
