Financial Education Benefits Center Lets the Cat Out of the Bag With an Upcoming Pet Care Benefit

SAN RAMON, Calif., Nov. 29, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Legislation in Pennsylvania passed this year that offers greater protections for pets exposed to extreme weather. The new law prohibits people from tethering dogs outside for more than half an hour if the temperature is below 32 degrees or above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. As winter approaches and freezing temperatures become more frequent, it behooves pet owners to consider their pet's health in winter weather. The Financial Education Benefits Center will be offering a pet care discounts membership benefit to address the health needs of pets during extreme weather and year round. With the benefit, eligible FEBC members will be able to save money on a variety of veterinary and pet care services.

Pets may suffer in colder temperatures, especially when they are out of their element. Notably, dogs' cold tolerance varies. Breeds native to high-altitude or northern-latitude locations, like huskies or Samoyeds, can deal with the cold better, especially with their thick fur. Other breeds with shorter hair, or smaller dogs that are lower to the ground, may be more susceptible to getting wet and cold in winter weather. However, all dogs will suffer in extremely cold temperatures if left unattended.

"For many people, pets are part of the family," said Jennifer Martinez, Manager at FEBC. "But they often require a lot of work ? and sometimes a lot of money. But for a beloved pet, you're going to spend that money to keep them alive and well. This upcoming benefit could make some of those expenses much more manageable."

After finding out more about their animal and how the animal fares in more extreme temperatures, pet owners can take steps to prevent harm. For example, something as simple as a dog sweater and booties, while also amusing to look at, may help a pet avoid serious cases of frostbite or hypothermia during winter months. But since pets are living things, pet owners can't always control what happens, and a trip to the vet may be necessary. And since the benefit is not insurance, no pet is disqualified from any discounts because of the pet's species, age, or medical history.

"Even if you take excellent care of your pet, something could still go wrong," said Martinez. "And it helps to know whether you have a bearded dragon or a rare breed of dog, your pet isn't excluded from the pet care benefit. That may make it all the more easy to care for an animal that's a big part of your life."
