Human research centre to place Canada on world stage

WHAT:
The University of Windsor will host an all-party information session on a new research and testing centre of national and international significance, the Canadian Centre for Alternatives to Animal Methods (CCAAM), launched last month.
From Brazil to China, countries across the globe have already established centres dedicated to alternatives to animal testing, but this is the first of its kind in Canada. Through 21st century science, innovation, and ethics, CCAAM will develop, validate, and promote human-centred approaches that are faster, cheaper, and provide more reliable and timely science-based information, enabling us to advance medicine and make the best possible decisions to protect human health and the environment.
The CCAAM subsidiary on campus, the Canadian Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods (CaCVAM), will be operated in close partnership with Health Canada. CaCVAM will be active in various international alternatives consortia, including the Chemical Test Guidelines Program at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to modernize chemical safety testing.
Canada has been a world leader in biomedical research, but Canadians do not have all the safe and effective treatments they need for even the most prevalent diseases today. Many research breakthroughs do not make it into our clinics?it is difficult to accurately translate discoveries from lab animals to human patients because of immutable biological differences.
