Riverside Radiology Physician Research Featured in The New England Journal of Medicine

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Nov. 20, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Riverside Radiology and Interventional Associates (RRIA), a leading provider of professional radiology services to hospitals and other healthcare providers, today announced the publication of an article co-authored by two RRIA physicians in The New England Journal of Medicine.

RRIA physicians Ronald F. Budzik, M.D. and Nirav A. Vora, M.D. co-authored the article, "Thrombectomy 6 to 24 Hours after Stroke with a Mismatch between Deficit and Infarct." According to their research, a procedure to remove clots from blocked blood vessels, known as thrombectomy, may be beneficial for some stroke patients, even beyond the treatment window endorsed by current guidelines.

"Our findings could help stroke patients all over the world who arrive at the hospital after the current six-hour treatment window has closed," said Ronald F. Budzik, M.D., a member of RRIA's interventional radiology team. "Clot removal can make a positive, significant difference for these patients who would otherwise no longer qualify for any intervention."

The study looked at over 200 patients with similar kinds of clots, who were identified between six and 24 hours after a stroke. Roughly half of the patients were randomly selected to receive standard care, while the other half underwent surgery. The surgical patients had significantly better outcomes three months later.

"The impact of this trial will revolutionize how stroke care is delivered nationally," said Marcia Flaherty, CEO at Riverside Radiology and Interventional Associates. "This research is a testament to the cutting-edge leadership of our neuro interventional surgery team as well as RRIA's culture of innovation and leadership."
