Inground Pool Cover Company, LOOP-LOC, Discusses Fall Leaves and Their Transition

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y., Nov. 15, 2017 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Inground pool cover company, LOOP-LOC, discusses fall leaves and their transition.

One of the most glorious things about fall is witnessing the transition of the leaves from green to hues of red, orange, purple, and yellow as they fall from the trees. The reasons behind this transition are fascinating. The mixture of colors in the leaves is the result of a chemical process that occurs in the trees as summer transitions into winter.

From spring to summer, the leaves make the food that is necessary for the tree's growth. This process takes place in the leaf in the cells that contain chlorophyll, which gives the leaf its green color. This chemical also absorbs energy from the sun, and uses it to transform water and carbon dioxide to carbohydrates such as sugars and starch.

In addition to the leaf's green pigment are yellow to orange pigments (carotenes and xanthophyll,) which are often masked by the large amount of green pigment. However, in the fall, when the days become shorter and the temperature changes, the leaves stop manufacturing green. As a result, the chlorophyll begins to break down, the green pigment disappears, and the yellow to orange colors become visible, providing us with a popular fall pastime of leaf-viewing!

At the same time, additional chemical changes may take place, forming additional colors through the development of red anthocyanin pigments. Mixtures such as these result in the fall colors of trees such as sumacs and dogwoods. Some autumn foliage is only yellow. The varying colors are due to the mixing of different amounts of the chlorophyll residue combined with other pigments in the leaf during the fall.
