Road Safety Loses an Icon
TORONTO, Nov. 11, 2017 /CNW/ - "It is with great sorrow that arrive alive DRIVE SOBER announces the passing of board member and past vice-president John G Bates. John worked for Maclean Hunter for much of his life. Following the death of a son of a family friend, John became involved in PRIDE (People Reducing Impaired Driving Everywhere) which became MADD Canada in 1992, with John as the Founder; to this day they honour his outstanding work with the John G Bates Volunteer award.
John joined the board of arrive alive DRIVE SOBER in 2008 as a director at large and subsequently served as Vice-President, as well on the Policy and Legislative Review Committee. John brought a wealth of experience and determination to these roles, and remained active on our board until shortly before his passing.
John had been battling a relentless lung disease. He passed away Friday at the age of 90 at his home in Toronto with his loving wife of 62 years, Connie, by his side and surrounded by three generations of loving family.
He was iconic in the road safety arena - his stalwart efforts saved many lives ? all the while acting strictly as a volunteer. John's devotion to preventing impaired driving earned him the Order of Canada in 1998. His insightful knowledge and dedication will be missed by all who worked with him."
