New "tough talk" book for parents of teen drug addicts is released in defiance of federal complacency.

NEW YORK, Nov. 9, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- A new book by Dr. Laurence M. Westreich acknowledges what President Trump called "a national health emergency". Although the president neglected his promise to allocate federal funding in August to combat the epidemic of opioid-related deaths among teenagers, parents now have a potentially life-saving tool in A Parent's Guide to Teen Addiction: Professional Advice on Signs, Symptoms, What to Say, and How to Help (Skyhorse Publishing hardcover; October 17, 2017; $22.99).

New "tough talk" book for parents of teen drug addicts is released in defiance of federal complacency. A Parent's Guide to Teen Addiction: Professional Advice on Signs, Symptoms, What to Say, and How to Help by Laurence M. Westreich, MD Skyhorse Publishing, Inc.

Parents who suspect their teen's substance abuse often don't know if their teen is addicted or what to do about it. Westreich, an addiction expert and the father of two teenagers, helps parents navigate the fraught addiction landscape. Divided into three sections, this book?based on the author's decades of experience evaluating and treating teenagers who use substances?guides parents from the moment they suspect their teen has a substance abuse problem to the steps families must take after intensive treatment.

Westreich . . .

Best of all, he includes "tough talk" dialogues that parents can tailor to their specific situation with their teen. This practical, hopeful, and reassuring book helps parents put their teen on the healthy and life-affirming road to recovery.

"If your teenager uses opioids, you cannot wait until he 'hits bottom,' because the bottom might be death," Westreich warns. He advises parents to act upon the first recognition of a child's opioid use, and he offers hope for recovery. "Treatment works! Intensive inpatient programs, outpatient group or individual therapy, and even some medications can save your teenager's life."
