Veterans and Families Cook Up Pizza Fun with Wounded Warrior Project

CINCINNATI, Nov. 9, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) teamed with Dewey's Pizza to give warriors and their families a chance to experience old-school pizza-making techniques: tossing dough high in the air to shape it, topping a pie with favorites, and sliding the pizza into a huge oven. Of course, the final exam, the most anticipated part of pizza school, is eating your creation.

Veterans recently attended Dewey's Pizza School with Wounded Warrior Project.

"I felt it was a great experience for me and my kids to bond," said Army Reserve veteran Matthew Lawrence. "The team members were super helpful with crafting the pizza with the kids."

Matthew went with sausage, green peppers, and banana peppers on his unique pizza creation. He said he thinks he'll now try to make his own pizza at home.

Sharing meaningful time with other warriors and family is an essential element of WWP programs. Matthew said he and his kids had fun interacting with other warriors during the event on a very busy football Sunday at Dewey's.

"I have attended other Wounded Warrior Project events, including a movie screening, a day at Kings Island, a football game, and a golf outing. Despite being out of the service, there is still a strong support system for us through Wounded Warrior Project while we adjust back to civilian life."

WWP program events like this give wounded warriors an opportunity to experience firsthand what is possible at social gatherings that get them out of the house and connect them with fellow service members and their communities.

Dewey's Pizza not only offered this hands-on pizza school event to warriors and their families, but also donated funds raised from the public to WWP.

Thanks to generous donors, WWP programs and services are offered free of charge to warriors, their caregivers, and families, and they assist with mental health, physical health and wellness, career and benefits counseling, connecting warriors with one another and their communities, and long-term care for the most seriously wounded.
