Media Advisory - Governor General to Meet with Canadian Delegation Taking Part in Ceremonies Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium


OTTAWA, Nov. 3, 2017 /CNW/ - As part of Veterans' Week, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, will meet with members of the Canadian delegation who will soon be travelling to Belgium to take part in ceremonies commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele. The event will take place at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa on Monday, November 6, 2017, at 10 a.m.

Her Excellency will speak to a delegation of more than 40 Canadians, including veterans, parliamentarians and youth, who will travel to Belgium to pay tribute to the more than 4 000 Canadian soldiers killed and 12 000 wounded during the Battle of Passchendaele. Also in attendance will be the 125 students and teachers from Encounters with Canada who will be taking part in commemorations to be held in Canada. The event will conclude with the preparation of a message that will form part of a commemorative work of art.

About the Battle of Passchendaele
The Battle of Passchendaele took place in Belgium in the summer and fall of 1917. Some 100 000 members of the Canadian Corps joined the fighting there in October and fought valiantly to bring an end to this brutal and bloody battle. Thousands of Canadians lost their lives or were wounded in the effort. To mark the 100th anniversary of this battle, ceremonies will be taking place in Europe and Canada.
