Honduran Officials Run Simulation of Election Transparency Software

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, Nov. 2, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- This week, the Honduran Supreme Electoral Tribunal conducted a simulation of its election certification server for official observers from the European Union and the Organization of American States. The demonstration was held at Honduras's National Vocational Training Institute in preparation for the November 26 national election.

Supreme Electoral Tribunal Judge Erick Rodríguez called the event "a very special day" for the Honduran people. The simulation offered a preview of how data will be processed on election day as it moves from the polling station to electoral observers from the OAS and EU.

The Supreme Electoral Tribunal, or TSE, is the regulatory body in Honduras charged with administering elections, safeguarding citizen access to voting, and strengthening the democratic system. TSE unveiled its new electoral transparency software last month.

According to TSE head David Matamoros, election monitors from the EU, the OAS, and all 10 political parties participating in the Honduran election will have immediate access to images of vote totals from across the country. He also mentioned that the election data will be encrypted and unalterable, that polling station representatives will be appointed by political parties, and that the election will not be certified until all parties and monitors have signed off on the results.

"Anyone who has doubts [about the results] can verify the information in a correct and reliable way," he said.
