Statement - Minister Goodale met with G7 partners to determine ways to more effectively combat terrorism

ISCHIA, Italy, Oct. 20, 2017 CNW/ - Today, the Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, issued the following statement after attending the G7 Interior Ministers' meeting.

"In our interconnected world, terrorism is a global, borderless problem and international cooperation is essential to combating it. The Government of Canada's priority is to keep Canadians safe, while safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.  At our meeting today I reaffirmed Canada's steadfast commitment to working together to ensure early detection and prevention of all potential threats to the public ? both at home and around the world, from all forms of violent extremism from any ideology.

Canada and our international partners, along with representatives from communications service providers, discussed ways we can work together to prevent terrorists from misusing the internet to recruit new members and promote violence.

It is imperative that we stay ahead of the curve on terrorists' use of the internet by understanding and anticipating how the online space can be abused. Canada committed to working closely with our allies and industry partners to obstruct terrorist efforts.

Discussions also took place on measures to combat terrorism offline, such as preventing would-be foreign fighters from traveling to commit terrorist offences and managing their return.

I am encouraged by the shared commitment to cooperation at our meeting and look forward to continuing to work with our allies and partners."
