Fifth 2016 Census of Population release: Aboriginal peoples, Immigration and ethnocultural diversity, and Housing

OTTAWA, Oct. 18, 2017 /CNW/ - Next week, Statistics Canada will turn the spotlight on the next set of topics of interest to Canadians. Statistics Canada continues to share its year-long story of our country and its people, based on the results of the 2016 Census of Population.

The Aboriginal peoples release will examine the growth and diversity of the Aboriginal identity population, including First Nations people, Métis and Inuit. The release in The Daily will also discuss the average age of the Aboriginal identity population, and growth in the population since 1996. This release will be supplemented by three Census in Brief articles. They will examine the housing conditions of Aboriginal peoples in Canada, the use of Aboriginal languages, and the living arrangements of young Aboriginal children. Each article will also provide information on First Nations people, Métis and Inuit.

The immigration and ethnocultural diversity releases will provide recent and historical trends on immigration, including new information on admission category, by various levels of geography. It will also present a portrait of the population by ethnic origin and visible minority groups. The Daily will be supplemented by three Census in Brief articles that look at diverse topics, including the children of immigrant families, the linguistic integration of immigrants, and the ethnic and cultural origins of the population.

The release on housing will look at the changing housing landscape in Canada over the past decade. The Daily will describe key housing indicators, such as the rate of homeownership, the share of households living in condominiums and the share of households living in shelter not considered affordable.

Data on Aboriginal peoples, immigration, ethnocultural diversity and housing will be published at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time on October 25, 2017, on our website.

As with previous census releases, the story of Canada as seen through the 2016 Census will be supplemented with data visualization products, including infographics and a video.

Next month, Statistics Canada will publish additional census data in its last major release, providing greater insights on the Canadian population.

Data and analyses on education, labour, journey to work, language of work, mobility and migration will be released on November 29, 2017.
