Focus is on Financial Literacy Teachers
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Oct. 18, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- This year, K-12 schools in several states including Illinois and New York, are subject to a new mandate for teaching financial literacy. In response, c21 Student Resources has launched its Teach-the-Teacher Financial Education podcast program designed to help instructors master the skills they need for educating students with c21's personal finance and money management curriculum.
"These states are truly preparing students for the future," said Susan Mulcaire, a former banking and finance attorney, teacher, and curriculum designer. In a recent survey, the National Financial Educators Council asked 2,409 people to select the high school course that would most benefit their life. 54.13% of respondents chose money management over math, science, and social studies combined. "Students are definitely motivated to learn about money," said Mulcaire.
Why do so many states lag in financial education? Mulcaire advised that another survey, conducted by Price Waterhouse Cooper, revealed the two biggest obstacles to financial education: teachers' general lack of confidence in their personal ability to teach the subject and a dearth of suitable curriculum.
c21's mission is to provide the financial educator with both competency and curriculum. "Through our straight-forward lesson plans and audio podcasts, educators are able to quickly master the course and get into the classroom to teach," said Mulcaire. The program, based on The 21st Century Student's Guide to Financial Literacy - Getting Personal, addresses a comprehensive list of personal finance and money management skills, topics, and vocabulary. c21's resources were recently included in the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy clearinghouse for grades 7-12.
Teachers won't need to spend hours in professional learning, earn a micro-credential or certificate which some programs require.
