Show thanks for important public service - student transportation

TORONTO, Oct. 13, 2017 /CNW/ -

October 16-20, 2017 is School Bus Safety Week, a special opportunity for media, parents, students, teachers, motorists, school bus companies, school boards/transportation consortia, and many others - to come together and reinforce the importance of student transportation and school bus safety.  "# STOP ON RED!" is this year's theme (adopted from the National Association for Pupil Transportation ? NAPT).  It helps remind everyone of the importance for all motorists to be aware of their surroundings, particularly near stopped school buses with their red overhead lights flashing and stop arm extended.

Wednesday, October 18, 2017 - School Bus Driver Appreciation Day.  Please show your thanks to professional school bus drivers everywhere, with a simple wave, a thank you or maybe even a cup of coffee.  They embrace a tremendous responsibility to ensure kids remain protected and out of harm's way each and every day.

Ontario's 18,000+ professional school bus drivers safeguard over 825,000 kids to and from school every day.  This means more than two million kilometres driven every school day and 300 million safe rides each school year.  Ontario's student transportation industry delivers in excess of 42% of the two million elementary and secondary school students enrolled in Ontario's educational institutions.  Parents in Ontario depend on this important public service to arrive at their homes, on time, 5 days a week, 10 months of the year.  As guardians of safety, professional school bus drivers are dedicated to transporting our children, reliably, securely, and ready to learn.

About the Ontario School Bus Association
The Ontario School Bus Association (OSBA), founded in 1951, is the premier association providing advocacy, education, legislative and regulatory services to the provincial school bus industry. Our school bus operator members own and operate 75% of all school purpose vehicles in Ontario. OSBA member partners include school bus operator service providers, school boards/transportation consortia and supplier/manufacturers. Together, the school bus industry maintains the highest safety record of all commercial vehicles on the road, according to Transport Canada.
