ISRA: Rep. Moylan Revives His Divisive Campaign Against Law-Abiding Firearm Owners

CHICAGO, Oct. 9, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following was released today by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA):

While people of good conscience ponder the aftermath of the recent Las Vegas mass murders, political opportunists have seized the moment to hammer the rights of lawful American citizens.  Illinois State Representative Marty Moylan (D-Des Plaines) is one such opportunist.

Late last week, Moylan introduced HB4107 ? a bill that would result in the ban and eventual forfeiture of millions of firearms lawfully owned by Illinois citizens.  Much of what is contained in HB4107 was lifted from previous bogus attempts to crack down on law-abiding hunters and sportsmen.  Past legislatures have widely rejected such schemes as being bad public policy ? and rightly so.  Enactment of HB4107 would in no way deter crime or prevent the occurrence of events such as the Las Vegas mass murder.  Moylan knows that - and so do the criminals.

"Like people the world over, ISRA members were appalled and saddened by the carnage inflicted in Las Vegas," commented ISRA Executive Director, Richard Pearson.  "After all, the victims were regular folks just like us ? just out on the town trying to have a good time."

"It is entirely understandable that people are looking for answers," continued Pearson.  "Citizens want to know why someone would commit such an atrocity and they also want to know what may be done to prevent future occurrences.  There is certainly an array of appropriate public policy responses out there, but launching a divisive campaign to single out and vilify lawful gun owners should not one of them."

"Marty Moylan has an obsessive hatred of firearms and the people who own them," said Pearson.  "Throughout his political career, Moylan has gone out of his way to antagonize a whole class of good Illinois citizens merely because they choose to own firearms.  Make no mistake, HB4107 was penned by Moylan specifically to force penance on lawful firearm owners.  Moylan's hatred of firearm owners has blinded him to the fact that fostering division will not help solve the state's, or the nation's problems."

"The ISRA considers the protection and preservation of the right to keep and bear arms to be a cultural imperative," concluded Pearson.  "The ISRA won't stand by and watch Moylan tax, license, register and eventually confiscate arms belonging to law-abiding Illinois citizens.  We will be asking all Illinois firearms owners to contact their State Representatives and State Senators to express their disapproval of HB4107, and to ask their legislators to vote against HB4107 should it come to the floor."

The ISRA is the state's leading advocate of safe, lawful, and responsible firearms ownership.  For more than a century, the ISRA has represented the interests of millions of law-abiding Illinois firearm owners.
