Reaction of the CMM to the cancelation of the Energy East Project

MONTRÉAL, Oct. 5, 2017 /CNW Telbec/ - The Mayor of Montreal and President of the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal, Mr. Denis Coderre, responded to the cancelation of the Energy East project in the following terms: "I am satisfied that TransCanada is abandoning this project. Given the low level of social acceptability of such a project, it was the only option. "

He also wished to salute the tireless work of the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal and Indigenous First Nations, as well as the municipal sector, and civil society. "This collective effort demonstrates the extent to which we can no longer dissociate sustainable development from economic development or the social cohesion of a given territory."

It should be noted that the CMM has been opposed to the project since January 2016, following a major public consultation by the Environment Commission. Nearly 150 submissions have been filed. TransCanada's project had significant environmental risks and created few positive impacts on the economy. This project also did not comply with the Metropolitan Planning and Development Plan (PMDP) as it crossed woods, wetlands, an agricultural zone and many rivers in the territory

The Energy Easy Pipeline Project planned to transfer 1.1 million barrels of oil from the Alberta oil sands to Saint John, New Brunswick through a 4,600-kilometer pipeline.

Established on January 1, 2001, the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal is a planning, coordination, and financing organization that brings together 82 municipalities, comprising nearly 4 million residents over 4,360 square kilometers. The Communauté has powers in the fields of regional planning, economic development, social housing, public transport and the environment.-
