Prime Minister meets with national Indigenous leaders and First Ministers
OTTAWA, Oct. 3, 2017 /CNW/ - Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today met with national Indigenous leaders and hosted a meeting of First Ministers with national Indigenous leaders.
The Prime Minister first met with Perry Bellegarde, National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations; Natan Obed, President of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami; and Clément Chartier, President of the Métis National Council. The national Indigenous leaders spoke to the Prime Minister about their respective priorities to promote socio-economic growth, and overcome barriers inhibiting greater prosperity and wellness among Indigenous Peoples.
The three national Indigenous leaders then attended a meeting of First Ministers hosted by the Prime Minister. First Ministers and Indigenous leaders discussed measures to promote the inclusion of Indigenous Peoples in an economic growth agenda and the connection to the broader reconciliation agenda. The Indigenous leaders, Premiers and the Prime Minister emphasized the need to work together in a collaborative manner, recognizing that economic development issues cut across jurisdictions.
Today's meetings with the national Indigenous leaders are in addition to the Permanent Bilateral Mechanisms with the Assembly of First Nations and First Nations, the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami and the four Inuit Nunangat Regions, and the Métis National Council and its governing members.
