PA Breast Cancer Coalition Honors Governor Tom Wolf, Focuses On Future Of Cancer Care At Annual Conference In Harrisburg

HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 3, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The PA Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC) hosts its annual Conference Friday, October 6 from 8:30a.m. to 3:30p.m. at the Hilton Harrisburg. The one-day Conference features workshops from world-renowned experts in the breast cancer community. Attendees will learn the latest on topics including metastatic breast cancer, lymphedema, genetics, survivorship, clinical trials, families and breast cancer, immunotherapy, nutrition, yoga and more!

The PBCC presents the Pink Ribbon Award to Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf at this year's luncheon beginning at 12:00p.m. in the Hilton's Harrisburg Ballroom. Governor Wolf made Pennsylvania the first state in the nation to cover 3D screening mammograms at no cost to women insured under PA law. Since that time, the PBCC has seen an overwhelming increase in the number of mammography centers offering 3D screenings. The number of 3D facilities went up 29 percent in the past year alone.

"Governor Wolf's decision to make 3D screening mammograms free for women in Pennsylvania is saving lives," said PBCC President and Founder Pat Halpin-Murphy. "3D mammography offers better detection and fewer false alarms. The PA Breast Cancer Coalition is proud to recognize the Governor for making a difference for the women and families of Pennsylvania with his groundbreaking action. Thank you, Governor Wolf."

The 2017 Potamkin Prize winner Clifford A. Hudis, MD is CEO of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) where he oversees 43,000 oncologists across the country. Dr. Hudis also cares for breast cancer patients at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. For decades, his research has transformed treatments for cancer patients through advances in chemotherapy, metastatic breast cancer clinical trials and palliative care. Dr. Hudis kicks off the Conference with a workshop on his latest studies of obesity and its impact on breast cancer.

Pink Ribbon Awardees and Helen Michener and Laraine Forry dedicate their lives to supporting breast cancer survivors and researchers in PA and host several events for the PA Breast Cancer Coalition. Through their efforts with Toasting a Cure at the Vineyard, Drive Out Breast Cancer and the 104-mile Freedom from Breast Cancer Walk, Michener and Forry have raised more than $87,000!  The PBCC awards the Dr. William L. and Marilynn R. Kanenson Shining Light Award to Breaststroke for Breast Cancer, a Grassroots Partner swimming event held each year at the Hershey Aquatic Club. Breaststroke for Breast Cancer has contributed $78,000 toward the PBCC's mission and vision.
