Statement from Minister Monsef on the occasion of Women's History Month

OTTAWA, Oct. 1, 2017 /CNW/ - The Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister of Status of Women, today issued the following statement on Women's History Month:

"Women's History Month is a time of celebration; it's an opportunity to reflect on where we have been, honour those who have paved the paths toward gender equality, and recognize all of the women and girls in our communities who continue this work each and every day. October is about celebrating the tremendous achievements of Canadian girls and women and reflecting on the future we want for our country ? now and for the next 150 years.

As trailblazer Nellie McClung said: "Yesterday's successes will not do for today! Women must claim the place they have won." This statement inspired this year's theme, Claim Your Place, which pays tribute to the courageous women and girls whose ambitions and extraordinary efforts have already generated positive change for Canadians. Many were the firsts in their field, making their mark in politics, business, the arts, media, and STEM?women who defied stereotypes and challenged conventions to claim their place in history. Their legacies live on in the individuals who continue to strive for greater equality.

That is why Women's History Month is also a time to focus on the work that remains to make gender equality a reality. Claim Your Place is a call to action, encouraging everyone to continue the essential work of advancing gender equality in Canada.

This October, I invite you to learn more about the trailblazing women and girls whose acts of courage have paved the way towards a more equal society. And join the movement online by using the hashtag #ClaimYourPlace to share the story of a woman or a girl who inspires you. Happy Women's History Month."
