New CCRM Study Confirms GameteHealth Supplement Boosts Male Fertility

DENVER, Sept. 27, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The Colorado Center for Reproductive Medicine (CCRM), a leading fertility treatment network, is conducting a clinical research study to explore how its natural antioxidant supplement, GameteHealth, could increase the odds of a successful pregnancy by improving sperm health. The initial results of the study have found that men taking the supplement prior to in vitro fertilization (IVF) have healthier sperm.

In the ongoing CCRM study, men with abnormally high levels of sperm DNA fragmentation took the GameteHealth supplement every day for 90 days prior to IVF treatment. To date, 10 men have participated in the study and all (100 percent) have now tested in the normal range for sperm DNA fragmentation following 90 days of taking GameteHealth. Of the 10 men, four have partners that received an embryo transfer resulting in three ongoing clinical pregnancies; an encouraging outcome.

Unlike over-the-counter antioxidant supplements, GameteHealth contains natural acai berries. It is produced in a way to preserve the natural high level of antioxidant activity in the berries that is measured by biochemical analysis, making it a powerful supplement that is not currently available over-the-counter.

"The early results of our study have been very promising," says CCRM Founder William Schoolcraft, M.D. "About half the cases of infertility stem from "male-factor" origins. If we can improve the health of sperm, we can increase the odds of a successful pregnancy."

DNA fragmentation in sperm is one of the reasons couples have trouble conceiving and maintaining a pregnancy. DNA is comprised of two biopolymer strands, which carries a person's genetic information required for growth, development, function and reproduction. When there is a physical break in one or both strands, the DNA is considered "fragmented" and damaged. Recent studies have shown that high-level sperm DNA fragmentation has a detrimental effect on the outcome of IVF and/or intracytoplasmic sperm injection, such as reduced fertilization rates, embryo quality, pregnancy rates and increased miscarriage rates.

Sperm DNA fragmentation can be caused by oxidative stress ? when the redox balance between antioxidant defenses and the reactive oxygen species (ROS) within the body are disrupted. Oxidative stress is brought about through aging, lifestyle choices and the environment, such as pollutants, medicines, diet, tobacco/alcohol use, etc.
