Assisi Animal Health Discusses the Characteristics of Responsible Dog Ownership

Owning a dog is not only a privilege, but a responsibility as well. These animals heavily depend on us to supply food and water, in addition to providing a comfortable living environment. If you already have a dog, you need to determine whether you are honoring all your commitments as its owner.
It is far better to know what is actually normal for your own companion, before you feel something is abnormal. Here are four ways to help you to become a more responsible dog owner:
- Maintain weight. If you feel that your dog's weight is fluctuating, get on a scale and keep track of what you sense is the usual healthy weight. If you are having trouble weighing your dog at home, do not hesitate to reach out to your veterinarian.
- Ensure regular activity. One of the simplest ways to monitor wellbeing is merely by walking. If your dog is eager to accompany you on walks, or play fetch in the yard, and moves with ambition and excitement, this is typically a sign that things are in the clear. If the usually energetic dog is reluctant to join you, or moves with unwillingness, this is an indication that something is aggravating your pet, and it is time for a wellness check with your veterinarian.
- Provide a comfortable environment. It is recommended to acquire a new bed, one with enhanced cushioning and possibly even a remedial pillow. Re-position the bed so it is near where you spend the most time; this avoids your dog's desire to jump up on a couch or chair to be near you.
- Check temperature. Use a normal glass thermometer or digital thermometer to regulate the temperature of your dog. Lubricate it and gently insert it, about one inch, into the rectum. If you are using a conventional thermometer, leave it in for 2 minutes. If you are using a digital, wait until it beeps. Normal temperature for a dog is between 100 and 102. Anything below or above would indicate a potential situation and require an immediate call to your veterinarian.
It is important to remember that you are your dog's best monitor! If you detect an abnormality, do not second guess yourself. Drive directly to your veterinarian and seek medical advice.
