FloridaESA Launches Drive to Provide Hurricane Irma Victims Emotional Support Animal Services Free of Charge

BOCA RATON, Fla., Sept. 25, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- In the wake of Hurricane Irma, FloridaESA has launched a drive to provide their Emotional Support Animal services free of charge to families and pets impacted by the storm.

A state-licensed mental health care provider, FloridaESA issues Emotional Support Animal Letters of Prescription to individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, sleep issues, and other recognized conditions. Through companionship and unconditional affection, these animals are an effective treatment option, bringing comfort and helping to minimize negative symptoms.

Allowed under the Federal Fair Housing and Air Carrier Access Acts, FloridaESA's doctor-prescribed recommendation letters provide access to housing and travel amenities, while providing protection against discrimination, eviction, and unfair fees and deposits.

"Our hearts are with Florida during this devastating time," said Dr. Stacy Aberle, CEO of FloridaESA. "The bond between humans and their pets is essential, and even more so in these moments of stress. Helping families and their pets live and travel together is critical."

To qualify for an emotional support animal, an individual must be considered emotionally disabled by a licensed mental health professional. Federal Law prohibits additional fees and provides the following protections:

  1. ESAs can fly with their psychologically emotionally or disabled handler in the main cabin.
  2. Qualify for no-pets-allowed housing.
