Discover The Gather-Ring, a new public artwork next to the Ottawa River

OTTAWA, Sept. 15, 2017 /CNW/ - This week, the Department of Canadian Heritage unveiled The Gather-Ring, a new temporary public artwork located on the Portage Bridge Plaza in Ottawa.

Inspired by the theme of dreaming, The Gather-Ring evokes two symbols deeply rooted in Indigenous traditions: the Tree and the Dream Catcher. It consists of a huge patterned canopy with hand-blown glass pendants representing the Dream Catcher, above a circular cedar base representing the Tree. Benches installed in the centre of The Gather-Ring provide passersby with an inviting place for gathering and reflection, as well as a panoramic view of the Ottawa River. The piece was created by architect Manuel A. Baez and artist Charlynne Lafontaine, in consultation with Indigenous groups.

The Gather-Ring is being exhibited as part of the Art in the Capital program, which adds warmth and vitality to parks, streets and public places in Canada's Capital Region, while showcasing the talent of Canadian artists.

Quick Facts

The Gather-Ring will be on exhibit until July 2018.

The benches were constructed from preserved and restored logs recovered from the Ottawa River.

At nightfall, LED lighting illuminates the artwork.

An interpretation panel provides explanation for the artwork in Algonquin, English and French.

Manuel A. Baez is an architect and associate professor at the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism at Carleton University. Charlynne Lafontaine is a glass artist.
