As Irma Approaches, Hill's Pet Nutrition Urges Pet Parents to Be Prepared
TOPEKA, Kan., Sept. 9, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- With Hurricane Irma poised to hit Florida and other Southeastern states, massive evacuation and storm preparations are underway. A crucial part of these preparations should be an evacuation or sheltering plan that includes not only the human members of the family, but also their pets.
In an effort to ensure adequate pet food supplies are available to emergency shelters and families during disaster management and recovery, Hill's Pet Nutrition and a network of local animal shelters across the country have formed the Hill's Disaster Relief Network. In addition to distributing food to pets in need, the Network has also undertaken a nation-wide educational campaign over the last four years to raise awareness and instruct pet parents on how to be ready when disaster strikes.
The Hill's Disaster Relief Network recommends the following tips for pet parents:
- Ensure your pet's identification by using a microchip or collar ID tag, and make sure that all contact information is up-to-date.
- Display a pet rescue decal on the front door or window to let first responders know there is a pet in the house. Include the local veterinarian's contact information.
- Learn where your pets like to hide in the house when frightened. Finding a pet quickly will help to evacuate faster.
- Identify a location to take a pet in case of evacuation. Keep in mind that disaster shelters for people may not be open to pets. Scout hotels and motels with pet-friendly policies and ask relatives or friends if they could house you and your pet.
- Carry a picture of the pet in the event of separation.
- In case of evacuation, consider taking a pet carrier or crate for transport and safe-keeping.
The Network also suggests every pet household to have a Pet Emergency Go-Kit in case a rapid evacuation is needed. The kit should include the following items:
- Basic first aid supplies
- A 3-day supply of bottled water and the pet's preferred food, held in a waterproof container
- Safety harness and leash
- Waste clean-up supplies
- Medications and a copy of the pet's medical records
- List of veterinarians and local pet care organizations
- List of the pet's feeding routine and any behavioral issues
- Comfort items, such as a blanket or favorite toy, to help keep the pet calm and comfortable
This hurricane season, with the approach of Harvey, the Hill's Disaster Relief Network has been activated to send more than 55,000 pounds of pet food supplies to animal welfare organizations caring for pets in Texas, Louisiana and New Mexico, and has already pre-positioned a record amount of pet food supplies for anticipated needs in Florida and other Southeastern states affected by Irma.
