Community of Summerland will benefit from improved community spaces for a better quality of life

$15,000 from the Government of Canada has upgraded the Lakeshore Racquets Club

SUMMERLAND, BC, Aug. 18, 2017 /CNW/ - Members of the Lakeshore Racquets Club are benefitting from safer, more reliable infrastructure as a result of funding of $15,000 from the Government of Canada.

The funding and inauguration of the upgraded facility was announced today by the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for Western Economic Diversification Canada.

The funding has supported the installation of energy-efficient LED lighting, as well as the repair and resurfacing of the club's tennis and squash courts.

This investment is being allocated under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program, a $300-million fund that was established to celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary of Confederation through investments in the community spaces that bring Canadians together. Of that amount, up to $92.4 million is being invested across Western Canada.

The Lakeshore Racquets Club was founded in 1974 as a non-profit society and continues to be run by its 100 members on a volunteer basis. The club provides tennis and squash programming to the community for all ages and abilities.

Quotes

"This investment is a community-building project to celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary. And there's no better way to mark this milestone than to celebrate the places that bring us together ? the places that allow us to stay fit, unwind and connect with our friends and neighbours. That's how we establish the bonds of common understanding and friendship in a country where people come from every corner of the world. The values of openness, diversity and inclusion that define all Canadians are forged in our community spaces."
- The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for Western Economic Diversification Canada

"No matter what form recreational community infrastructure comes in, it all plays a key role in building a stronger, more vibrant and healthier community for everyone. I am proud we have been able to support the upgrade of the Lakeshore Racquets Club, which will ensure this facility remains a valued part of the community of Summerland."
The Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities

"The Lakeshore Racquets Club has been providing recreation services to the community of Summerland for over 40 years. Thanks to the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure grant we have been able to make upgrades that will allow us to continue offering a high quality facility for many more years to come.'
- Grant Thompson, President, Lakeshore Racquets Club
